Scholarship Fair Program (Fall)

Program Components

  • The ULNWI partners with Infinite Scholars to gather together Historically Black Colleges, post-secondary educational institutions from the Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland Area to meet Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland Area high school students who hold a 2.5 or higher grade point average.
  • The Colleges and Universities may offer conditional admission to their institutions during the Fair.
  • The Colleges and Universities may offer partial or full scholarships to students who meet specified criteria.
  • The ULNWI tracks the college admission and academic success of students who attend the Scholarship Fair.

 


 

Scholastic Luncheon (Spring)

Program Components

  • The ULNWI serves as an Administrator for ten scholarship funds. The ULNWI holds the funds to fulfill the scholarships, advertises the scholarships to the targeted student population and manages the scholarship applications submitted by students.
  •  The ULNWI develops a Scholarship Committee who reviews each scholarship application to determine the winners for each of the scholarship funds.
  •  The ULNWI contacts that scholarship winners and invites them and their families to the Scholastic Luncheon.
  •  At the Luncheon, the winning scholarship recipients receive their scholarship checks and receive recognition for their academic accomplishments in the presence of their peers and school administrators.
  •  In addition to the scholarship winners, the ULNWI invites all students who have a 3.0 GPA or higher to attend the luncheon and provides them with certificates of excellence in acknowledgment of their academic achievement.


Employment Counseling (On-going)

Program Components

  • The ULNWI serves as an access point for the local WorkOne Office, which is responsible for providing career placement, educational services and training to job seekers. The ULNWI provides the same services that are offered by WorkOne, but has the ability to provide one-on-one support to clients.
  • Clients may walk-in and or call to schedule an appointment to work with an Employment Counselor Coordinator (Volunteer position). The E.C.C. will help the client develop a professional email, will guide the client through the WorkOne site to build their professional profile, resume and skills assessment.
  •  The ULNWI provides each client with a listing of current job openings, job fairs and job trainings that are available.

 

College Readiness (On-going)

Program Components:

  • NWI college campus tours
  • Preparation of college admission essays
  • Guidance on financial aid

 

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (Fall)

Program Components:

  • Recruitment and training of Income Tax Prepares
  • Free preparation and E-file submission of income taxes for individuals who have annual incomes of $53,000 or less

 

Digital Literacy Program (On-going)

Program Components:

  • Provide free courses to junior high to secondary school students on the use of technology for college readiness, career planning and for seeking funding for college
  • Supports enhancing the digital literacy of job seekers to prepare online job applications

 

IText-IWreck (On-going)

Program Components:

  • Supports educating youth on the dangers of texting while driving through computerized simulations
  • Supports the use of social media campaigns to encourage youth to pledge not to text and drive
  • Funds exhibits and videos that express the consequences of distracted driving
  • Allows for peer youth leadership training

 

Diversity and Inclusion Awards Luncheon (Spring)

Program Components:

  • Recognition of organizations in Northwest Indiana with notable diversity and inclusion programs.
  • Highlights of diversity and inclusion initiatives implemented by Northwest Indiana High School Students

 

Diversity and Inclusion Symposium (Fall)

Program Components:

  • Professional workshops on diverse recruitment, supplier diversity, youth & workforce programs that promote inclusion
  • Panel of experts who represent organized labor, workers with disabilities, entrepreneurs, educators, mental health and social service professionals
